DIRFloortime

What is DIRFloortime?

DIRFloortime, also known as Floortime, is a therapeutic approach that stands for Developmental, Individual-differences, Relationship-based. It's a framework for understanding human development and promoting healthy development in children, particularly those with autism, neurodivergent, and other developmental challenges. The "Floortime" aspect refers to the practice of engaging with the child on the floor, following their lead and building interactions based on their interests and cues. The model focuses heavily on relationships and acquisition of critical developmental capacities that allow children and adults to thrive.

The Stable Connections team utilizes the DIRFloortime approach to strategically promote the development of fine motor control, speech, language and feeding, play, attention, and emotional regulation skills through joyful interactions and activities. By understanding these developmental capacities, the factors that influence them and by working on them, we can help improve these skills through appropriate and meaningful emotional experiences.

Key Components of DIRFloortime:
  • Developmental:
This refers to the focus on understanding the typical stages of development and how a child's individual differences impact their progress.
  • Individual-differences:
Recognizing and respecting the unique strengths, challenges, and learning styles of each child.
  • Relationship-based:
Emphasizing the importance of building strong, positive relationships with caregivers and therapists to foster emotional and social growth.
  • Floortime:
The hands-on, play-based interaction where a therapist gets down on the floor with the child, following their lead and engaging in back-and-forth interactions to promote social-emotional development, communication, and problem-solving skills.

When the DIRFloortime approach is utilized within your child's treatment plan, our therapists will evaluate your child from a holistic perspective with a focus on your child’s unique sensory, motor, and emotional processing systems. From this comprehensive assessment, we develop an “Individual Profile” of your child. This individual profile will help you understand your child from the “inside-out’ so that you can best support their development.

Empowering parents and caregivers to play a leading role in their child's treatment is a key component of the DIRFloortime model. Through parent coaching, you will learn how to promote your child’s fine motor, speech, language and feeding, play, attention, and emotional regulation abilities in a very meaningful way while improving your relationship, interactions and connection with your child. Secured attached relationships are instrumental in helping children not only develop skills but to thrive.

The DIRFloortime Model aims to support children in reaching their full potential by fostering healthy social-emotional development, communication, and cognitive skills. At Stable Connections we often use DIRFloortime as a complementary approach alongside other therapies as it can be tailored to the unique challenges and strengths of both neurotypical and neurodiverse clients.
