Dynamic Movement Intervention

Gross motor skills are an essential component for reaching milestones of growth. At Stable Connections, we work with children to control and move their bodies by offering Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) to improve those motor skills in a loving, supportive environment and help catch up on missed milestones for effective childhood development.

What is Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)?

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a therapeutic technique specifically used for children with motor delays by stimulating neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and function in response to experience. What makes this therapy unique among other forms of therapy is that it incorporates the latest research and technologies to stimulate children’s neurological connections and motor skills, regardless of their level of cognition or disability.

DMI utilizes dynamic exercises and hands-on motor-based interventions that provoke an active response from a child to improve automatic postural responses and promote progress toward developmental milestones.
Who Can Benefit from DMI?

Children with any type of motor delay can benefit from DMI, as it stimulates postural control, promotes neurological maturity, develops automatic motor movements, and focuses on functional ability. We treat children with a range of conditions, mainly those that affect a child’s neurological development. Some of these include:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Dyspraxia (developmental coordination disorder)
  • Spina bifida
  • Developmental delay
  • Hypotonia
  • Genetic disorders
  • Chromosomal abnormalities/ Genetic disorders
  • Spinal cord lesions
  • Acquired brain injury
  • Down Syndrome
  • Children at risk of developmental delays, such as those born prematurely
  • Other motor impairment

Our therapists will create an exercise routine for each child, tailoring it to their current skill level and goals. These exercises require them to move against gravity, adapt to changes in support levels, and overcome sensory and motor challenges.

At Stable Connections, we have Occupational and Physical Therapists certified in this technique who may utilize different exercises in your therapy plan to target individual gross or fine motor goals. Our treatments are often child-led, utilizing preferred tasks or toys, which helps to mask the repetition and means they have fun while working super hard!
Benefits of DMI
  • Develops automatic motor movement
  • Independence
  • Alignment and postural control
  • Increases muscle and joint range of motion
  • Improves balance
  • Higher rate of functional movements (rolling, sitting, standing, walking, etc)
  • Somatosensory development
  • Modifying tone/ reflexes
  • Stimulates neuroplasticity to facilitate new neuronal connections
  • Stimulates postural control
  • Promotes neurological maturity
  • Focuses on functional ability
