Parent Coaching

We provide Parent Coaching to families to elevate the therapy their child receives. This is a collaborative and supportive approach where parents and caregivers learn strategies to help their children achieve goals and navigate daily life. It focuses on empowering parents with knowledge, skills, and resources to support their child's development and well-being. This approach is personalized, solution-focused, and aims to build parents' confidence and competence in supporting their children.

Key Aspects of Parent Coaching:
  • Collaborative and individualized:
Occupational Therapists (OT's) work with parents to identify their priorities, strengths, and challenges, tailoring strategies to their specific needs and context.

  • Focus on practical strategies:
OT parent coaching emphasizes teaching parents evidence-based strategies and techniques that can be implemented in the home and daily routines to support their child's development and address challenges.

  • Building confidence and competence:
Through education, guidance, and support, OT parent coaching helps parents feel more confident in their ability to support their child and manage challenges effectively.

  • Promoting participation in therapy:
OT parent coaching encourages parents to actively participate in their child's therapy, supporting progress both during and outside of therapy sessions.

  • Addressing a wide range of needs:
OT parent coaching can be helpful for various challenges, including self-care, toileting, behavior management, implementing therapy plans, and navigating developmental milestones.

How Parent Coaching Works:
  • Initial assessment and goal setting:
OTs work with parents to understand their child's needs, strengths, and goals, as well as the family's priorities.

  • Education and strategy development:
OTs provide education and guidance on topics relevant to the child's needs, such as child development, sensory processing, behaviour management, and self-regulation.

  • Skill practice and implementation:
Parents practice strategies and techniques with the OT's support, gradually implementing them in their daily routines with their child.

  • Ongoing support and follow-up:
OTs provide ongoing support and follow-up to ensure parents feel confident and equipped to continue supporting their child's progress.

Benefits of Parent Coaching:
  • Improved child outcomes:
By empowering parents with the knowledge and skills to support their children, OT parent coaching can lead to improved child outcomes in various areas, such as self-care, behavior, and academic performance.

  • Reduced parental stress:
When parents feel more confident and capable in supporting their child, it can lead to a decrease in parental stress and anxiety.

  • Enhanced parent-child relationship:
OT parent coaching can strengthen the parent-child relationship by fostering a more positive and supportive environment.

  • Increased family well-being:
By addressing challenges and promoting positive interactions, OT parent coaching can contribute to a more harmonious and thriving family environment.
Your therapist will provide parent coaching during and at the end of your child's therapy session. We also host parent coaching workshops - contact the office for more information on our next parent coaching workshop.
