The SpiderCage, also known as the Universal Exercise Unit, is a therapeutic tool used in our paediatric physiotherapy & occupational therapy sessions, and intensive therapy programs when deemed appropriate. The SpiderCage provides external body weight support and suspension via a dynamic bungee and pulley system which can be tailored by the therapist to benefit each individual child, depending on their specific needs. How it Works
The SpiderCage suspension system supports the child, eliminating gravitational forces, allowing them to perform more controlled and independent movements, which decreases pathological and neurological reactions that affect mobility. This system helps children with very limited strength, range of motion, or body control to accomplish activities their doctors never thought possible. Children can practice forms of balance, stretching, and muscle support, opening children up to a new set of treatments that impact their gait, balance, and sense of coordination. Who Can Benefit From the SpiderCage? The SpiderCage therapy tool is typically utilized with individuals who have difficulty holding themselves upright in various positions against gravity without external support. This may be due to increased or decreased muscle tone; weakness; impaired balance; impaired spatial awareness; or a variety of other causes. The SpiderCage allows individuals to initiate and experience movements and gross motor skills that otherwise may not be available to them. |
What Type of Therapeutic Activities are Performed in the SpiderCage?
The SpiderCage allows the therapist to assist an individual with exercises and activities in various positions that optimize motor learning and neuroplasticity. These positions include quadruped (on hands and knees), variations of kneeling, sitting, and standing.
