Vestibular Stimulation

What is Vestibular Stimulation?

Vestibular stimulation refers to the input our body receives when experiencing movement or changes in position in relation to gravity. The sensory information is processed by the vestibular system, which is a sensory system located in the inner ear that plays a crucial role in balance, spatial orientation, and coordination of head and eye movements. This stimulation can range from mild, like walking or nodding the head, to intense, like riding a rollercoaster.

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a therapy intended to alleviate problems with having a vestibular system that is out of balance.

Our vestibular system is the one that tells us where our body is in space, and with it not functioning at its fullest capacity leads to lack of balance and general limitations in movement as well as vision. The types of exercises that are typically performed to strengthen the child's vestibular system involve movement, whether that be on a ball, an Astronaut Board, or on a variety of swings. By repeatedly performing specific movements and exercises, the brain can learn to tolerate and accurately interpret the information it receives from the vestibular system helping to retrain the brain. These exercises are often combined with other therapies facilitated by our occupational therapists.
