What is Whole Body Vibration?
Whole Body Vibration (WBV) therapy involves standing, sitting, or lying on a platform that vibrates, causing the body to experience mechanical oscillations. This therapy is used in physical medicine, physical & occupational therapy, and neuro-rehabilitation to address various conditions, and it may offer benefits such as increased muscle strength and function, and bone density, improved balance and mobility, and pain reduction. Research suggests Whole Body Vibration may also improve circulation, reduce muscle soreness after exercise, and potentially improve mood and well-being.
Vibration has been historically used in the treatment of certain sensory processing deficits, and we have seen great results when using the vibrating machine with our sensory clients. In fact, preliminary research shows that Whole Body Vibration may decrease the number of stereotypical behaviours exhibited in children with Autism.
Vibration therapy for autism and other sensory challenges has been found helpful in many cases. It may improve body awareness, help to regulate the body’s arousal levels, reduce stress, and help with calming and focus in both children and adults. If your therapist deems you or your child will benefit from Whole Body Vibration, they will be sure to add it your child’s therapeutic regime.
