Physiotherapy

Picture
Physiotherapy is a healthcare treatment designed to restore and improve movement and physical function. It is commonly used after injury or illness and also supports individuals living with disabilities, developmental delays, or those looking to maintain and enhance their mobility. Using a combination of tailored exercises, hands-on therapy, and education, physiotherapy helps manage pain, promote recovery, and improve overall physical wellbeing.

Physiotherapists (PTs) are highly trained healthcare professionals who hold a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy and are registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba (CPM). They specialise in assessing, diagnosing, and treating conditions that affect movement and physical function. Their focus is on restoring, maintaining, and improving a person’s ability to move and perform everyday activities. Physiotherapists provide care across the lifespan, supporting patients from infancy through to older adulthood.

Our team includes physiotherapists with specialized training and extensive experience in paediatric physiotherapy. They have in-depth understanding of childhood conditions, illnesses, and developmental stages. They apply specialized knowledge of reflexes, movement patterns, posture, alignment, and growth milestones to support each child’s optimal development, providing expert assessment and treatment for infants, children, and adolescents.
Physiotherapy can assist with a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions: sports injuries, back pain, neck pain, and arthritis
  • Neurological conditions: stroke, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy
  • Cardiovascular and respiratory conditions: rehabilitation following heart attacks or lung surgery
  • Paediatric conditions and developmental concerns: delayed walking, torticollis, toe walking, and other developmental diagnoses
  • Other concerns: age-related mobility issues, post-operative rehabilitation, and chronic pain

Our physiotherapists can incorporate medical quality equine movement as a tool to assist their treatment plans and regimes for patients. They can overlay a variety of motor tasks on the horse’s movement to address the motor needs of each client and to promote functional outcomes in skill areas related to gross motor ability such as sitting, standing, and walking.

Why is Early Intervention in Therapy   Important?

Early intervention in physical and occupational therapy is crucial for promoting faster recovery, preventing complications, and maximizing long-term outcomes for individuals of all ages. By addressing issues promptly, these therapies can significantly improve physical and mental well-being, enhance independence, and potentially reduce long-term healthcare costs.

If a child has a developmental diagnosis with known associated delays, Stable Connections encourages starting physiotherapy or occupational therapy before the first signs of delay. This allows us to minimize the delay and prevent learned compensatory patterns. We evaluate children starting as early as 1 month of age for known developmental disabilities as well as torticollis and plagiocephaly.

Children recommended for physical or occupational therapy can highly benefit from the expertise and compassionate care provided by our team of Registered and specially trained therapists. We provide individualized treatment and therapy programs for each child specific for their needs. For example our therapies are trained in the SpiderCage (Universal Exercise Unit) and Dynamic Movement Intervention that can help children succeed.

Stable Connections can provide multiple models for physical and occupational therapy to help your child reach their developmental needs, including:

  • SpiderCage (Universal Exercise Unit):
The SpiderCage works through a system of pulleys and weights to help hone balance, muscle control, and motor skills to enhance your child’s abilities.

  • Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI):
Dynamic movement intervention involves directly challenging the child’s motor skills through repeated, dynamic exercises to improve balance and function.

  • Intensive Therapy:
    Intensive therapy works through intensive,
two to three-week-long sessions to improve posture, maintain regular movement, and catch up on lost milestones.
  • Muscle and Joint Strengthening:
Children faced with severe injuries affecting their mobility throughout the muscles and joints can partake in strengthening exercises to regain range of motion and control.
